A Physical Education And Health Instructor Teaches Her Students About The Relevant Issues Involved In Alcoholism Signs
Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the most under financed co-ed high school in the state. Even though she had been teaching for only five years, she had already obtained a reputation as a person with teaching techniques that inspired and stimulated the students in her class to learn and to think.

For example, one Wednesday morning at 11:30 she addressed the pupils in her class and stated the following: "For the next two or three days we are going to learn about some commonplace alcoholism signs from a more wide-ranging standpoint and we are also going to learn about some of the most typical signs of alcoholism from a less general and more specific standpoint."

"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will categorically confirm that an individual with a drinking problem is an individual who is addicted to alcohol, but the more signs that an individual displays, the higher the probability that she or he is an alcoholic."

Miss Jackson then explained to the members of the class that each individual would be held responsible for researching three alcohol dependence signs and then presenting his or her findings to the other class members by way of a nine minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcohol dependency signs that were discussed and presented in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked the pupils in her classroom to study the list and rank the top nine alcohol addiction signs that were most indicative of alcohol addiction. After about fifteen minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and told her pupils that after she examines the results, she will reveal her findings the morning of the next school day.

Miss Jackson told the students in her classroom to go over the information on the sheet of paper she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, concerns, or issues. Within 20 or 30 seconds, just about everyone in the classroom raised her or his hand. It was clear to see that the pupils had some concerns, issues, or questions about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism specialists. For instance, virtually every individual in the class disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism professionals, specifically, "Do you feel awfully nauseous when you abstain from drinking?"

Miss Jackson then informed her students why this answer was the most precise indicator of alcoholism. She highlighted the fact that the chief difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.

For all intents and purposes this means that when an individual who is addicted to alcohol abruptly stops drinking, he or she will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the significance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the alcohol dependent individual, the pupils started to recognize the fundamental difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.

A few minutes later the bell rang, signifying the end of the class. Based on the enthusiasm manifested by the pupils when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson recognized that she had stimulated and encouraged the students in her classroom to stop and think about an important health issue and social problem that exists in our culture.
