Emily was a thirty-three-year-old cost estimator who was tired of feeling depressed on a daily basis and sick of her abusive and careless drinking behavior. Stated simply, she was mad at herself for spending her hard-earned money on a valueless habit, she hated the hangovers she experienced on a regular basis, she missed her old motivation for doing various things she liked, she was tired of going through failed relationship after failed relationship due to her hazardous drinking, and she was sick of feeling lackluster every morning. Above and beyond the obvious alcohol-related health issues she now experienced, possibly the most damaging part of her drinking behavior was the untrustworthy and devious person she had become. In her heart of hearts she realized that she had been less than truthful about her drinking activities with friends, family, and relatives and she also knew she had been lying to herself about the "healthy" effects of drinking. Not only this but she rationalized gulping two or three drinks before going to social events and she also justified needing three or four drinks as soon as she awakened so that she could deal with the "stress" at work. Stated briefly, Emily got to a key moment in her life during which she saw that she hit the bottom of the barrel in her life and was now prepared to begin the slow and gradual road that leads to recovery. One of the key ways that Emily initiated her "plan" was by requesting a transfer at work. When her request was approved by Human Resources and by top management, she moved 950 miles away to a different part of the United States. If nothing else, this beyond doubt made making new buddies and distancing herself from her old friends and pals easier. Then she contacted a physician in her new residence and made an appointment for a thorough physical and psychological examination. After meeting with the healthcare practitioner and taking a number of lab tests, it was decided that Emily had crossed the line from alcohol abuse to alcoholism and, as a result, needed alcohol detox and alcohol treatment. At this difficult time, her healthcare professional made it a point to articulate the different alcoholic symptoms and the typical symptoms of alcoholism. In addition to focusing a lot of attention on Emily's alcoholism symptoms, the healthcare professional also told Emily that her psychological assessment revealed that she was clinically depressed and in need of treatment for this medical problem. Due to her eagerness to follow through with the therapy protocol, after five weeks of residential treatment, Emily was ready to initiate rehab on an outpatient basis. At this time in her life, she began working at her new job and over a period of several weeks began revitalizing her body by eating healthy foods, living an alcohol-free lifestyle, working out, taking vitamins, and drinking spring water. After around eleven weeks of outpatient therapy during which time she never went through an alcohol relapse, Emily stopped going to alcohol treatment and instead began going three times every week to local AA meetings. Attending these meetings helped Emily maintain her alcohol-free style of life, they provided her with the support she sought after, and they served as a steady reminder of the adverse outcomes that are associated with unhealthy and abusive drinking. Compared with her life less than a year ago, life was now wonderful and full of possibilities that she could have never longed for or achieved while she was involved in careless and hazardous drinking behavior. |
