| A Young Male Needs Therapy For His Severe Depression, Relationship Problems, And For His Alcohol Dependency And Drug Addiction |

Roughly three months ago I had dinner with a thirty-five-year-old male named Benjamin who experiences severe depression, has relationship difficulties, and who is alcohol and drug dependent. As mentioned by Benjamin, it is his alcohol and drug addiction and his extreme depression that has had the most to do with his unceasing relationship problems. As explained by Benjamin, he is so overwhelmed by his relationship issues and by both of his medical issues that he basically has no energy to accomplish much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin completed two semesters of graduate school in psychology. Benjamin's circumstance makes me wonder if he is an example of a person who can look in the mirror and perceive his drug addiction and drinking problems and do something positive about these issues. Or, to the contrary, if he is someone who has to hit life's bottom before he gets drug and alcohol rehab that leads to lasting sobriety. It may be asked how rehabilitation would help his chemical dependency. First of all, there are some recently developed doctor-prescribed medications that can help Benjamin through the alcohol and drug detoxification process, through his withdrawal symptoms, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse. Second, in therapy he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the various stages of alcoholism. Third, Benjamin would learn to understand the fact that there is utterly nothing positive about chemical dependency and abusive and hazardous drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that involving himself in one or both of these unhealthy situations is the route to poor work and school performance, a premature death, financial difficulties, deteriorating health, shattered relationships, and legal problems. Fourth, treatment for his relationship problems and his depression might help him deal with these mental health difficulties more effectively and possibly create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally, in counseling he could also learn more about the diverse symptoms of alcoholism that he has displayed. Due to the fact that Benjamin doesn't have the ambition to succeed at doing much of anything in his life, it is evident that he badly needs some hope for a healthier existence. And the sad thing is that hope is virtually everywhere around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the treatment he requires for his severe depression and alcoholism and drug addiction and stick with his treatment program. Benjamin is clearly too young to be beaten in life. He doesn't comprehend this at the moment but if he can learn how to remove himself from drugs and alcohol via drug and alcohol rehab and get the treatment he requires for his severe depression, he can redirect his life and begin living with passion, direction, and with self-respect. More meaningful relationships, constructive change, self respect, and a wonderful life are certainly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can get inspired to get the professional rehab he needs, follow through with his therapy regimen, live his life in a healthy and drug and alcohol-free way, and learn how to cultivate a more positive attitude about life.
