It took many years but Sarah eventually made up her mind that she had it with her husband's unhealthy drinking. She was weary from seeing Keith come home after 1:00 AM from drinking instead of spending quality time with her and the children. She was also sick and tired of the DUI Keith recently got. Moreover she was drained from making excuses for Keith when he couldn't make it to the office due to his hazardous and abusive drinking. Not only this but she was concerned about the fact that their relationship was crumbling due to Keith's careless drinking. And finally she was sick of the perilous financial predicament into which he had put his family due to his careless and abusive drinking behavior. One Friday afternoon when Sarah was reflecting on what she could do about her husband's careless and abusive drinking, she got to the point that she honestly had to do something to cut into the damaging cycle of Keith's unhealthy and abusive drinking behavior. So Sarah looked online under "alcohol treatment" and found more than a few treatment facilities that were all located less than twenty-five miles away from where her husband and she resided. When Sarah called each rehab clinic she introduced herself and articulated that her husband was involved in harmful drinking behavior. She also mentioned that her spouse had a top-rate health insurance at work and that outpatient or inpatient alcohol treatment would be covered if a health care practitioner in the company health network called for the treatment. After listening to Sarah discuss her husband's abusive drinking, the healthcare practitioner in a caring but resolute manner explained to Sarah how she probably played a role in her husband's unhealthy drinking through the months and the years. How? Primarily by minimizing his drinking behavior rather than allowing him to go through the consequences of his hazardous and abusive drinking behavior. Stated somewhat more forcefully, the psychologist stated to Sarah that she may have been inadvertently enabling Keith's abusive drinking behavior. The psychologist also underscored the point that Sarah could not control her spouse's behavior. With the guidance and support of the rehabilitation team at the rehab clinic, however, she would not only be able to learn how to refrain from contributing to Keith's hazardous and careless drinking but she could also learn how to motivate him to make an appointment at the rehab clinic so that he could talk about his hazardous and abusive drinking behavior with a psychologist. The good news was that after Sarah revealed this to her husband and he saw that she was serious, he told her that he had been extremely alarmed by his careless and abusive drinking behavior and that he was somewhat comforted to know that Sarah wanted to do something helpful about his harmful drinking behavior. Consequently, he scheduled an appointment to see a physician at the local alcohol rehab facility. While simply calling a rehab center does not guarantee that an individual's hazardous and abusive drinking behavior will become less problematic or that a person will automatically be more receptive to learning about alcohol abuse facts, scheduling an appointment is clearly a necessary feature in the treatment process. And since Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting professional assistance for his excessive and abusive drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the likelihood of a successful recovery was considerably enhanced. |
