For a number of years alcohol dependency research has demonstrated the fact that there is strong correlation between alcoholism and dangerous health situations. For example, in 2005, scientific research that focused on the signs of alcoholism demonstrated the fact that that alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction cost the United States an estimated $220 billion per year. It may be noted that this huge alcohol-related cash disbursement was substantially more than the cost linked with obesity ($133 billion) or with cancer ($196 billion). Furthermore, if alcohol dependency continues over a period of years, the person's body organs will more likely than not be affected in an unhealthy manner. For instance, repetitive, unhealthy and excessive drinking is especially injurious to the liver since the liver does most of the work of processing the alcohol that has been ingested. Excessive amounts of alcohol kill liver cells and destroy the ability of liver cells to regenerate. This condition results in a progressive inflammatory malfunction of the liver that can at the end of the day lead to cirrhosis of the liver, a critical and potentially terminal disease. Abusive and hazardous drinking not only can result in acute liver damage, but it can also lead to damage to the heart and to the brain. Physical damage this critical may be unalterable and may, in turn, lead to severe illness or premature death. It is critical, therefore, to know how to recognize the different alcoholism symptoms and the alcohol signs so that the alcohol dependent person can be given the opportunity to seek the professional alcohol rehabilitation he or she needs. Fortunately, scientific investigation is persistently finding unique and significant information. Recent alcohol dependency research provides an excellent example. More correctly, for approximately the last ten years, complex brain-imaging scanning devices have verified that continuous and chronic abusive and hazardous drinking changes the functionality of the brain to a substantial degree, consequently resulting in brain disease that can last months, years, or perhaps as long as the individual exists. This type of damage may be directly related to the alcohol's effects on the brain, to severe liver disease, or might be indirectly associated with the drinker's poor overall health. As a final example of various medical conditions that are largely correlated to alcohol dependency, consider that in accordance with medical exploration, the excessive and repeated abuse of alcohol can lead to erosive gastritis, a health problem that lessens the absorption of minerals, nutrients, and vitamins. This form of organ breakdown is correlated with malnutrition and to and to a variety of severe mental and neurological disorders including memory loss, sleep disturbances, and psychosis such as Wernicke's Encephalopathy and Korsakoff's syndrome. This latter medical problem is a lasting incapacitating condition that is exemplified by repetitive memory and learning problems. It is apparent that repetitive, unhealthy and excessive drinking is directly or indirectly associated with numerous serious medical problems that can and do lead to serious illness and premature death. Such information needs to be emphasized and presented to everyone in our society so that most individuals will be able to abstain from hazardous drinking while others who have a drinking problem develop a positive attitude and get motivated to seek the professional rehab they need. For without quality counseling, most individuals who drink in an irresponsible and abusive manner will not begin the healing process and experience an enhanced source of self esteem that many times comes from alcohol recovery.
