Work was becoming too frenzied for a young police officer named Lonnie. Even though he had only been on the police force for two-and-a-half years, he was already known as a hard worker who rarely refused working overtime. Actually, he was now working twenty-five to thirty hours of overtime each week and, as a result, he felt like he was losing his hold on his personal life. What made the situation more complex, however, was the fact that Lonnie began going out drinking with a bunch of his fellow officers after his shift was over. Clearly Lonnie was in a health related and psychological rut and experiencing some negative signs of alcoholism. Where Lonnie really noticed drinking related problems and alcoholism signs, on the other hand, was in his marriage and in his family life. His wife wasn't really a complainer, however she frequently begged him to stay at home more with the family rather than going out and spending money while drinking with his fellow officers. In his heart of hearts, it was clear to Lonnie that his careless and irresponsible drinking was negatively affecting his work, health, relationship with his family, and his pocketbook. So one Thursday afternoon Lonnie came to a decision to talk to Richard, a trusted old police officer friend that he greatly respected. Lonnie told Richard how careless drinking was negatively affecting his relationship with his family, work, pocketbook, and his health. Richard told Lonnie that he understood totally because just around seven years ago, he too became involved with irresponsible drinking. In fact, Richard told Lonnie that careless drinking can create so many problems in a person's life that virtually everything of importance can be destroyed. And lastly, Richard suggested that Lonnie make an appointment with an alcohol psychologist at the work-affiliated substance abuse rehab facility. Since his employee's assistance program was affiliated with this treatment clinic, it was not only very affordable but also quite convenient to seek rehab about his irresponsible drinking. And due to the fact that the staff at the alcohol abuse center was competent, supportive, and non-judgmental, Lonnie would be able to get alcohol treatment that made sense to him and something he could follow through on. After talking to his doctor about how his drinking was negatively affecting his work, health, relationship with his family, and his pocketbook, Lonnie comprehended the fact that he was burning the candle at both ends with his extreme work hours and his excessive and hazardous drinking. Once he comprehended that he was getting himself into a rut, after detoxification and with the help of his therapist, and after ten weeks in therapy, he was finally able to quit drinking and stop working overtime. The outcome was that Lonnie viewed life differently now that he was in alcohol recovery and took the time to learn more relevant alcoholism facts. More specifically, due to his alcohol counseling he not only was more patient when interacting with his wife and his children, but he actually had more money now even though he was working far fewer hours each week, he had more quality time to spend with his family, and he felt better and more healthy. Ironically, now that he stopped drinking, Lonnie and his wife were not only starting to save some money for a new house but he also felt more alert and more energized than anytime since he and his wife got married.
